In her book, Reclaiming Conversation – The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, Sherry Turkle explores our flight from interpersonal conversation as we turn less to one another to talk, and more often to our devices. What does this mean for law firms, lawyers, and clients?  Will it undermine relationships, trust, creativity, and productivity?

As a teacher of communication skills, I was reading Turkle’s book the day an entry-level lawyer confessed to me, “I don’t talk, I text!” But attorneys can’t use their thumbs to counsel clients, challenge colleagues, inform audiences, or persuade judges and juries. A lawyer’s craft is interpersonal conversation, face-to-face or on the phone. It is the foundation for developing the more difficult skills of public speaking and persuasive advocacy.

If we expect attorneys to be good communicators, let’s define those expectations by creating comprehensive professional speaking standards for lawyers. This webinar is the first step in that process, and I invite you to participate and contribute your ideas.
