JOB SUMMARY: The Head of Professional Development is responsible for driving the firm’s strategy and execution of best in class training and development. The Director will lead their team to design and deliver programs with innovative curricula that address key transition points in a professional’s careers, covering all aspects of professional development. Leadership responsibilities include managing a team responsible for development and implementation of learning and talent management for all members of Fried Frank, in all jurisdictions.
This job can be based out of NY or DC, with DC being the preferred location.

INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: This is a highly visible position, and as such, entails frequent interaction and collaboration with Partners, Associates, Directors, Business Services Professionals and various Firm Committees including the Attorney Relations Committee, the Attorney Development Committee, the Diversity Committee, and the NY and DC Associates Committees. This position also maintains relationships with colleagues at other firms and external professional organizations in order to keep abreast of best practices.

Firmwide Training Programs
• Design, manage, present, and evaluate the Firm’s training programs:
o Fried Frank University – a comprehensive orientation program for new attorneys
o Attorney Development Series – a substantive skills training series for first-year associates following Fried Frank University, which covers subjects including, but not limited to, Accounting and Writing
o Fried Frank University Graduate Program – a series of practical professional skills programs for third-year associates focused on assisting with the transition from junior to midlevel associate status, covering subjects including, but not limited to, Delegation and Feedback, Negotiation, Career Paths, and Business Development
o Business Development Training Series – a comprehensive global training series to assists attorneys in enhancing client service, networking, and business development skills
o Mentoring Groups, designed to help first year associates continue to adjust to the challenges of their first year
o Business Services Director and Manager Leadership Program Series
o Ethics training programs
• Ensure that all practice groups offer a series of training programs designed to equip attorneys with the requisite skills to master their respective practices and stay abreast of current developments in their field
• Oversee the development and implementation of a Business Services Training Curriculum for all support staff professionals.
• Work with both instructors and participants to review feedback/evaluation of programs to modify content and programs where appropriate
• Work cooperatively with the Marketing Department and relevant partners to develop and implement training programs and materials appropriate for attendance by clients and alumni
• Identify professional development consultants and thought leaders to offer innovative and effective programs for attorneys in all practice groups and well as for Business Services groups.
• Work with leading professional organizations and consultants to enhance opportunities for Fried Frank attorneys to present CLE programs and participate in professional development activities
• Identify potential instructors within the Firm to develop/teach programs in practice areas and Business Services areas not currently covered
• Maintain relationships with external providers, i.e. national/local bar associations and other professional development organizations, including the PDC
• Manage adoption and ongoing maintenance of our Skillsoft platform, ensuring continual reinforcement of initiatives and value-add.

CLE Program
• Oversee maintenance of library of CLE training programs
• Oversee management of Micron database and monitoring of all attorneys’ CLE compliance for New York and Virginia and assist lawyers barred in other states with their requirements
• Oversee maintenance of the Firm’s Accredited CLE Provider status in New York
• Develop, maintain and oversee management of relationships with outside training providers, such as PLI, Strafford Publishing, ABA, NITA, Micron, and state and local bar associations
• Oversee the maintenance and operation of the PLI training database
• Oversee the maintenance of the monthly CLE calendar for attorneys
• Select and evaluate outside training vendors

• Facilitate annual and mid-year performance evaluations for all attorneys and business services professionals
• Manage the partner evaluation process

Associate Relations
• Manage and participate in meetings and forums to promote communication and input on issues of concern to associates (e.g., Associates Committees, Associate Relations Committee); manage follow-up projects
• Counsel/coach individual associates
• Develop program of events to promote good work relationships among attorneys (e.g., attorney outings, happy hours, periodic lunches, dinners or other social events)

Associate Surveys
• Manage and oversee the AmLaw Midlevel Satisfaction Survey and Vault Associate Satisfaction Survey
• Create strategies and execute to maximize survey scores and respond to associate needs identified through the survey process

• Oversee the maintenance of the Partner Advisor Programs and Associate Advisor Programs
• Monitor the first-year associate mentoring circle programs
• Look to continual review our mentoring initiatives, to ensure fit for purpose and continual adoption

• Manage and coordinate firmwide coaching requests. Work with the business and coach to identify need and select appropriate coach. Act as a sponsor where appropriate.
• Manage costs and coordinate contracts where appropriate
• Where appropriate be the coach.

• Provide innovative and effective solutions to the Firm’s training and development needs
• Maintain the department’s budget
• When needed monitor associate pro bono compliance in relation to the Firm’s pro bono requirement

Education: JD and a background in legal management preferred but is not mandatory

Experience: At least 10 years of experience as a Professional Development expert at a Professional Services firm.

Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with attorneys, legal staff, management, peers, and communicating effectively in meetings. Ability to act in a fair, equitable and professional manner at all times; Ability to act with a high degree of integrity; Ability to act effectively and appropriately. Ability to work independently, under pressure with interruptions and tight deadlines; ability to use independent judgment, ability to assign and delegate work, problem solve, answer questions and evaluate results of performance in a realistic way.
